David Leonard: Music

My Back Pages

Bob Dylan

"My pathway led by confusion boats . . . Mutiny from stern to bow"?  What??  Has a better lyric ever been written?  I've always loved this song, and I've found I'm not alone.  This is another track that I used to play with The Fools.  I tried to tip my hat to Roger McGuinn with the 12-string solo, but it's hard not to fall short, isn't it?  God bless you, Bob Dylan.

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
